(The surprise covers up the fact the only thing he can cook is a plain rice ball.)
These adventures people go on are connected to the cities we visit. It looks like some groups will revisit a moment in the history to learn from while some might be like the ones I went on-- we go through a challenge to earn some reward in the end.
(Who knew Tsurumaru Kuninaga was actually observant and had a brain cell... Usually casual and whimsical, right now, he speaks like seriously like someone giving a report,)
I spoke to the first group that returned and I think they were like mine. They visited a place unrelated to Otamo and they found a note in the end. From what I've heard, it says, "This explosion would not only change the world we know, but the worlds we would never see."
(But wait, there's more,)
This week, Nanaly and I searched the canals and we found a stained glass that showed us the past. It showed Otamo before it was ruined. The buildings were tall and beautiful and the windows looked like rainbows. When we looked at it, we felt peace, wonder, and pride.
But then it changed. Fire fell from the sky and everything was destroyed. We watched the people flee into the underground and we felt their fear, anger, betrayal, and desperation.
The last thing we saw was the people writing on the walls before it was washed out with blood. "Clip their wings." "Liars." "Tyrants." "False idols."
Your party returned injured but most surprising, you returned burned as if from fire.
I want to know if your adventure can make sense of the note or vision.
We found those people underground. The ones who came back with us were their kids, people who’d lived down there their whole lives and weren’t so afraid to resurface. Everyone else was too scared and untrusting because of what happened to even think about coming with us.
We found graffiti like that too. Things like “can’t burn away the truth”, “the looking glass knows”, “clip their wings” and “tear them down”. There was a plaque down there too? Something like a grave marker, but it’d been worn away. I think what we could see was—
[ pretend he’s saying this: ]
.
There were people down there that had been changed by what happened. They looked human and injured, and pleaded for help, but when the escapees down there told us to look at them through the glass they became monsters. When we killed them, they exploded into flames. [ hence the burns. ] It was like… everything they saw was an Angel, and they attacked them blindly out of anger. Even if it wasn’t an Angel — they were definitely killing humans as well. Their memories showed that some “Angels” bled when they shouldn’t have…
[ … ]
There was a note at the end too. I think we’re re-writing it, because it’s so old? But… hang on, can I remember it…
“ Few are able to prove themselves worthy of ascending, to earn their wings and join the angels. For those that do, I wonder — is it worth it? Does this truly grant the power to save those they wish to protect? Or does it simply put them directly in harm's way?”
(Tsurumaru is quiet, listening to Yuri's report. Unsurprising, there is, in fact, a link between the things that were discovered and Yuri's adventure.)
It's as I thought.
(But there are things that do stand out to him and Tsurumaru raises a hand to his chin, thoughtful,)
It's different... but the people here were changed like the ones in Krankaz. And with each city we visit, it seems that the people grow more disillusioned with these angels. (And for good reason, based on what they've learned.) And yet... There's still some reverence for them.
To earn wings like an angel? When the statues in this city are so destroyed...
How were the people changed in Krankaz again? In the same way?
[ … ]
It sounds like whatever angels are, they’re not what they present themselves to people as. Not that that’s surprising when we have them coaxing people to kill and leaving them to deal with the aftermath.
… Those monsters were people. Does that mean angels were once people too?
(Reaching into his bag to hold out a letter to Yuri.)
It was different but the people of Krankaz were transformed into the fishmen the adventurers encountered last week. I spoke to Kim Dokja about what they were like and he said they begged to die but couldn't.
When they sensed their presence they said, "Oh I smell them, they're here. He's brought them to us. He sent you, didn't He? To mock us? Can you die? Will your souls save ours? Can we kill you?" And then they attacked.
(He'll let Yuri take the letter to read and assuming it will take awhile, he'll cross his arms for now,)
... I don't know. There are some people here who are familiar with angels but we don't have anything like them where I'm from.
Of course the last bit’s obscured. I would’ve been helpful to know what it was they think they did.
There were no regular humans left behind though? Or maybe they didn’t have places to run like the people from here did. [ so… that would be the final fate, maybe. everyone turned into one of those creatures, hunting angels that didn’t exist here any more. ]
I don’t know much about them either. We have statues that are usually related to goddesses, and they have wings, but I’m not exactly a religious sort of person so I don’t really care about what they symbolise to people.
Of course. I searched around for more notes but that was all I could find.
(He really tried but it be what it be.)
By the time we arrived in Krankaz, there were no more humans. Back when Krankaz was above the sea, it looks like it was attacked by a sea dragon, too. They seemed to think it was some sort of divine punishment for turning their back on God because they made weapons.
In the end, they were cursed. The note feels hopeless and by the time the adventure group encountered them, they seemed desperate to be released.
Otamo seems more outspoken-- cursing the angels, distrusting them, and turning on them completely. They turned their backs on the angels... but considering the fire that fell from the sky and the fates of those you met, I can't say they didn't have their reasons.
(Hmm...)
There are angels in my world but not where I'm from. They're something westerners believe in.
...I know there are those among us who are familiar with angels. Perhaps they know some stories that might give perspective.
I've asked one of the Watchers, but... they didn't have much knowledge on it. I might ask another one or two and see what I get from their perspectives.
But it seems like there's some kind of link there. Societies being destroyed after ... worshiping? Or revering angels for a long time.
It sounds like angels don’t have the emotions to want to protect something though. If someone became an angel to protect something in their home, then why destroy it in the long run? That’s counterproductive.
It sure doesn’t sound that way to me.
[ … ]
Sure. I think information exchanging about all this is going to be pretty important.

If we can figure it out, I think a lot of things will fall into place.
[ hm. ]
What do you want to know? You were on one before, so if you having something specific you’re asking about then start with that.

If these cities are destroyed after people become angels, it does make me wonder what if they really protected what they wanted.
(Hm...)
I'll ask around, as well. Shall we exchange reports again, Yuri?
