... One winter, a hunter found a crane caught in a trap. The season was harsh and he was hungry but he took pity on the creature and let it go.
He returned home, cold and hungry. When suddenly there was a knock at the door. A beautiful woman greeted him and asked if she could stay the night from the snowstorm outside. He let her into his home but when morning came, she stayed. They spent the season together, fell in love, and married.
When spring came, the hunter suddenly fell ill. He was poor and there was no money to buy medicine. His wife told him not to worry. She told him she would work in the room next to his and find a way to cure him. She asked him to trust her... and to not watch her while she worked.
The next morning, she revealed a beautiful robe. Her face was pale and she seemed tired. She took the robe into the market, sold it, and bought medicine. He recovered but soon, the medicine ran out and his health failed once more.
Again, she told him to rest and not watch her while she worked. Once more, she created a beautiful robe. Like before, she was pale and tired. She sold it, purchased more medicine, and treated him until it ran out.
Again and again, this process repeated until her own health began to fail. Concerned for his wife, he decided to watch her as she worked to see what was the cause. To his surprise, he saw not his wife but a crane, plucking the feathers from her wings to create her beautiful robes. He realized she had been sacrificing herself to save him. He demanded to know why she would do that for him.
She dropped her unfinished robe out of surprise and replied, "I do it for love."
"There can be love without sacrifice," He insisted and she cried, "No, there cannot."
Disappointed, she spread her wings and flew away for he lives without sacrifice doesn't deserve to be with a crane.
(The story ends and he is quiet for a moment,)
... In every version, the crane leaves but this is the one I dislike the most.
